What it is
Epitalon, also spelled epithalon, is the tetrapeptide alanine-glutamic acid-aspartic acid-glycine (AEDG). According to a 2025 review, it was synthesised based on the amino acid composition of epithalamin, a polypeptide extract of cattle pineal gland, before it was later reported to be present in that extract [1]. Most research on it comes from V. Kh. Khavinson’s group at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology and collaborators.
It is important to distinguish epitalon from epithalamin. Epithalamin is the crude extract; epitalon is a single defined synthetic peptide. Some human studies quoted in connection with epitalon, such as a 2003 longevity report, actually used epithalamin [6].
Epitalon is often discussed with other peptides marketed for longevity or sleep, such as DSIP and MOTS-c. For background on how such products are sold, see what research peptides are.
How it is thought to work
The best-known claim is that epitalon activates telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomeres at the ends of chromosomes. In a brief 2003 report, adding epitalon to cultures of human fetal fibroblasts, which normally lack telomerase activity, induced expression of the enzyme’s catalytic subunit, telomerase activity and telomere lengthening [2]. An independent 2025 study from Brunel University London found dose-dependent telomere lengthening in normal human cells through increased hTERT and telomerase activity; in two breast cancer cell lines, telomeres also lengthened, but through a different mechanism called alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) [3].
Epitalon is also described as a pineal regulator that influences melatonin. This is not consistent across studies: a 2003 experiment in isolated pineal glands from young and old rats found no significant effect of the tetrapeptide on melatonin secretion at any concentration tested [5].
What the research shows
In a lifespan study in female SHR mice, animals received epitalon (1.0 µg per mouse, about 30–40 µg/kg) by injection under the skin on five consecutive days each month from three months of age until death. Epitalon did not change mean lifespan, food intake or body weight. It increased the lifespan of the longest-lived 10% of mice by 13.3% and maximum lifespan by 12.3%, reduced chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells, and did not change total tumour incidence, although leukaemia was less frequent [4]. This was a single study of 54 mice per group from the developing group.
Other laboratory work from the same group reports effects on gene expression, chromatin and cell differentiation, which are summarised in the 2025 review [1]. Independent replication of the main findings is limited.
Human studies
We found no large randomised controlled trial of synthetic epitalon. A 2002 report from Khavinson’s group described epitalon treatment in patients with degenerative retinal disease and stated a positive clinical effect in 90% of cases, but the abstract gives little detail on design, numbers or controls [7].
The most widely quoted human “longevity” data concern the extract, not epitalon. In a 2003 report, 266 older people were followed for six to eight years after courses of thymalin (a thymus extract) and/or epithalamin; the authors reported lower mortality in treated groups, including a 1.6–1.8-fold reduction with epithalamin [6]. This was not a trial of epitalon, the allocation and blinding methods are not described in the abstract, and the findings have not been independently reproduced.
Doses used in published research
In the mouse lifespan study, epitalon was given at 1.0 µg per mouse (about 30–40 µg/kg) subcutaneously on five consecutive days each month [4]. Cell studies used a range of concentrations in culture [2] [3]. No human dose of epitalon has been established by a controlled trial, animal doses should not be converted to human doses, and nothing here is a recommendation. The peptide calculator converts vial contents to concentrations only.
Safety and side effects reported
The mouse lifespan study reported no effect on food intake or body weight and described long-term administration as safe in mice [4]. There are no adequate human safety data. Because epitalon is claimed to switch on telomerase, and cancer cells commonly rely on telomere maintenance, the 2025 finding that it lengthened telomeres in breast cancer cell lines is relevant to any safety assessment, though its significance for people is unknown [3].
The FDA has said that compounded drugs containing epitalon may pose a risk of immune reactions (immunogenicity) for some routes of administration and of peptide-related impurities [8].
Regulatory status
Epitalon is not approved as a medicine anywhere we are aware of. In the US, the FDA previously placed it in category 2 of its interim compounding policy, the list of bulk substances that may present significant safety risks; the nomination was later withdrawn and the FDA now lists it among substances previously in category 2 [8].
On 24 July 2026 the FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee considered epitalon for insomnia [9]. STAT reported a 7–4 vote to recommend adding it to the list of substances US pharmacies may compound, even though FDA staff had recommended against it. The FDA had not posted the votes when we checked, the vote is not binding, and as of September 2026 we have not confirmed a final FDA decision [10]. We have not confirmed its status on the WADA Prohibited List. See our legal status overview and the UK page.
Storage and handling
Epitalon is sold as a freeze-dried powder. Peptides are generally stored cold, dry and away from light, and reconstituted solutions are refrigerated and used within a limited period. See how to store peptides.

Frequently asked questions
What is epitalon?
Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) designed from the composition of epithalamin, a cattle pineal gland extract. It is sold as a research peptide for ageing and sleep.
Does epitalon lengthen telomeres?
In cell culture, yes: studies in 2003 and 2025 reported telomerase activation and telomere lengthening in human cells. This has not been shown in people.
Does epitalon extend lifespan?
In one mouse study it did not change average lifespan, though it modestly increased the lifespan of the longest-lived mice. There is no evidence that it extends human lifespan.
Are epitalon and epithalamin the same?
No. Epithalamin is an extract of cattle pineal glands, while epitalon is a single synthetic four-amino-acid peptide based on it. Several human studies often attributed to epitalon used epithalamin.
Is epitalon FDA-approved?
No. In July 2026 an FDA advisory committee reportedly voted 7–4 to recommend allowing US pharmacies to compound epitalon for insomnia, but the vote is not binding and is not an approval.
